REFLECTION: PROS and CONS
Below is a self reflection of my group's approach to combating light pollution.
PROS
We created local campaigns that helped educate students and teachers
We made a visually pleasing poster and were able to present our information well during our school presentation. Our game, although short, showed players how light negatively affected sleep in a clear and entertaining manner. We gave participants multiple methods of completing our survey with choices between typing in the URL, scanning a QR code, and being sent the link on social media services.
Conservation of light starting from a small scale can not only help with the amount of energy the individual uses but as well as help diminish their small light pollution contribution.
CONS
Our approach does not address the main cause of the issue which mostly has to do with the light from street lamps and from major companies that leave the lights on at their companies. Our approach primarily seeks to help individuals negate the negative effects of light pollution rather than attempting to solve the communal causes of light pollution.
As a group, I felt that we could have put more emphasis on educating the public using multiple strategies. Our flyer-only approach to educating our participants left them with limited additional knowledge, as we would find many of the flyers that we gave to our participants discarded in the trash. We could have also created an application that allowed users to measure light levels in their environment to help users identify problems in their households rather than having made a game to educate and entertain.
